Any suggestions for a decent sleep tracking smart watch. Nothing extreme but rather something relatively accurate in terms of sleep tracking… I have no idea of price ranges but am interested in budget friendly recommendations.
No individual Brand of smart watch is the best for tracking sleep, but you can bet the most convenient is the one you don’t have to charge up daily, or nightly, or worry that it might run out of power when you are using it. Mine takes a user-replaceable button battery that lasts six to eight months, needing no recharging!
The one I am using to track my sleep CYCLES is the Fossil Q Grant Gen.2. Hybrid Smartwatch. The Q Apps is simple to use, and the Bluetooth reconnects itself (most of the time) which is a plus. I changed the strap to a more comfortable washable, NATO nylon one and now that’s what I use constantly.
I would recommend Wellue’s sleep trackers: O2Ring sleep apnea monitor and SleepU wrist oxygen monitor.
Its features:
Continuously tracking oxygen levels, heart rate and body movements during sleep
Medical-grade accuracy
Silent alarms wake you up when detecting abnormal readings
Free app
Detailed sleep reports knowing something like how much time your oxygen levels are low
Automatically syncs data over Bluetooth
Comfortable silicone design
Lasts up to at least 12 hours (O2Ring) and 16 hours (SleepU) between charges
Ask yourself what you will do with the data. If the watch is very accurate and says you spent 2h 43 min in REM, 1h 14 min in Deep Sleep and 1.5h in Light Sleep. So what?
What are you going to do with this information?
Many watches are able to fairly accuratly detect when you fall asleep and when you wake up. The rest is just a gimmick. Useless information.
have you actually checked to see what is in the premium subscription for fitbit - as you can get most of your data without needing the sub. There are a couple of sleep related features that are included in the sub, but not necessary as sleep score and stages can be seen without a sub - its more the detail behind it that is in the sub.
Have you looked at garmin which offers an amazing amount of depth in regards to sleep tracking, and as its mostly stress/HRV based you can also use it to determine impacts that can improve your sleep. Biggest issue with garmin sleep tracking is around irregular work/sleep shifts - then its a bit more of a hassel; also for some duration can be an issue but ways around this too (and most including fitbit can suffer on this).
As Opitcal Heart Rates works differently with everyone there is no guarantee how well it will work for you, but most people have good success with fitbit, garmin and apple watch (note apple watch is locked to an iPhone so not an option if using android).
Have a look at the Quantified Scientist on YouTube for detailed analysis of smart watches and sleep tracking. Apple Watches tend to score highly.
I strongly disagree on sleep (he is fine on the rest) - his testing methodology for sleep tracking is not realistic.
Yeah, but Scanwatch is really pretty bad. I used to get near perfect scores when I know I was awake for a huge chunk of the night as long as I didn’t move around too much.
As an ex Scanwatch owner, now with a PW2 l, Fitbit is head and shoulders above. I’m sure Apple Watch is too. No subscription with Apple Watch, I believe. No need to pay the Fitbit subscription to get a good breakdown of sleep. The subscription is really about training recommendations/videos, some stress management stuff (not much use imo) and some really not necessary sleep stuff, like your sleep animal.
For me Huawei Watch D worked best until now. Tried Apple Watch, Withings ScanWatch 1+2,
I used a TicWatch Pro 5 but used a 3 prior to that, however I don’t use the provided sleep trackers, preferring “Sleep As Android” which can use WearOS devices as a movement tracker. It seems much better than the manufacturer’s sleep tracking apps and gives better consistency from watch to watch.
You can edit the results quickly and easily, and it has Tasker integration which means you can trigger it externally. I have a home automation system that starts the sleep tracking as part of the house “bedtime mode” so sleep tracking is activated and deactivated when I hit the bedtime on/off button next to the bed
