Which smartwatch should I get for basic use?

Hey everyone! I’ve been thinking about buying a smartwatch, but considering the few reasons I need one, I’m not sure if it’s really worth it.

Here’s what I’m looking for:

  • A large enough clock face so I can see it well with my bad eyesight.

  • A simple timer for my daily stretching and workouts (like 30s, 1min with just one tap).

  • I need it to vibrate when I get a call or SMS.

  • A neutral, elegant design since I don’t wear watches often.

  • A cardio sensor for my cardio training would be nice.

I will NOT be using it for reading messages, using the mic to answer calls, listening to music, or doing anything that requires reading small text or being super precise.

So, do you think it’s worth buying a smartwatch? If yes, which one would you recommend? Thanks in advance for your help!

I’ve checked out some thin and elegant but basic, affordable options here. My current favorite is the H06, but the DA09 has a 17% larger display, and while it’s not as good as the H06 in my opinion, it could fit your needs better.

I’m not exactly sure what you mean by “cardio sensor”. Most smartwatches (if not all) measure heart rate, but only some provide more advanced info like HRV.

Also, many offer watch faces with high-contrast dials, which can be really helpful for people with poor eyesight.

Thanks for your reply! I’ll definitely check these out.

Regarding the watch face, as long as you can change the watch face or use third-party options, this shouldn’t be a big issue. Smartwatches are usually bigger than traditional ones, so the screen and face will likely be larger. If you use a lot of menus, you might want to look for a watch where you can adjust the system font size, like the Apple Watch, Wear OS, and Garmin (not sure who else offers this). I find this super helpful as my eyes aren’t as sharp anymore.

For the timer, I’m not sure if I fully get the 30s, 1min example, but many smartwatches now have interval-based features. These are common on fitness brands like Garmin, Coros, Polar, and Suunto. If you choose an Apple Watch or Wear OS watch, there should be apps for this too, and most of them have timer functions built in.

As for vibrations on notifications, they all do that.

As for style, it’s really personal. I suggest you focus on the features first and then choose one that fits your taste. You might also want to consider hybrid watches (like Withings, Garmin Vivomove, or Garmin Crossover) depending on what activities you want to track.

About the cardio sensor—assuming you mean a heart rate sensor, the best one for you depends on what kind of activities you do. For some activities, a chest strap is the only way to get accurate readings, and not all smartwatches can connect to one. But for steady activities, most major brands will work fine, like Apple Watch, Pixel Watch (Wear OS), Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra, Garmin, Coros, Polar, Suunto, Huawei, some Fitbit models, and even Amazfit (though that’s model-dependent).

Thanks for your advice! I’ll look into these options.

I was thinking about getting the Garmin Vivoactive 5—it seems really durable and has a long battery life. I also looked at the Galaxy Watch 7, but the battery life of only one day seems pretty short for the price.

What are your thoughts on other brands like Google, Fitbit, or Amazfit?
